I find it really funny that all the international media outlets that have picked up this Aishwarya Rai baby weight story have made sure to point out that she’s facing “unfair” criticism from her home country and how wrong that is and how her Cannes appearance could be a turning point for women in the entertainment industry.
It’s just so ironic that they seem dumbfounded as to how she could be treated so unfairly in her home country when…hello, where do you think the Indian media got the idea that women were supposed to snap back to size 2 bodies after giving birth in the first place? They got it from Hollywood.
Like it’s great that it’s being acknowledged that the whole thing is total bullshit, but I just read a ~super supportive article about her from US Weekly and…excuse me, but I subscribe to US Weekly and I know you’ve zoomed in and circled a woman’s beach body on more than one occasion. You can’t have it both ways. I really hope this whole thing DOES bring positive change to perceptions of female beauty in the media, but it’s absolutely ridiculous for Western publications to place all the blame on the Indian media when they’re the ones who started the trend of ridiculing female bodies in the first place.
TELL THEM BROOKE!
